State of Utah is Hiring a Tax Specialist I Near Knoxville, UT

Job Description
If you would like an opportunity to increase your knowledge of Utah tax law, serve the public and work in a fast paced setting with a team of talented and dedicated individuals, this job is for you. The Utah State Tax Commission's Tax and Revenue is looking for a skilled and motivated individual to fill its Tax Specialist I position. This person will play an integral role in our mission to answer taxpayer inquires. You must be current on your state and federal tax filings and pass a criminal background check. This position may be eligible for remote work.


Principal Duties

The Tax Specialist will need to:

  • Conduct exams and/or research assignments
  • Answer phone calls and provide information to customers
  • Research and respond to taxpayer inquiries, problems and concerns both verbally and in writing
  • Research Utah State Tax law and regulations
  • Provide general and complex information needed to resolve tax issues
  • Enter and retrieve information from different systems
  • Make and complete adjustments to individual or business accounts
  • Explain and apply policies and procedures to taxpayers
  • Requires working in a contact center (call center)
The Ideal Candidate
The model candidate for this position is someone who:
  • has accounting, finance or business experience
  • has exceptional customer service skills
  • is very detail oriented
Preference
Preference may be given to those candidates that have:
  • Two years of experience in tax, accounting, banking, law or investigative work.
  • You may substitute one year of education in a related field for each year of required experience.
Salary
Starting salary will be $22.05 hourly, or per DHRM rules on transfer/promotion.

  • This position may be eligible for remote work.
  • Please note, a position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.
  • If working at a location other than in a state office, this position requires the employee to provide internet service that is of sufficient speed to support all work-related applications, systems, and devices.

  • Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):
    • 3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. (There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other medical insurance coverage)
    • 5 dental plan options (There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage)
    • 4 vision plan options under EyeMed or OptiCare

  • Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS)
    :
    • Employees hired on or after than 7/1/2011 and have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
    • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in Tier I Public Employees System.
    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
    • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in Tier I Public Employees System.

  • Paid Time Off
    :
    • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
    • Annual leave increases with years of service.
    • There are also 12 paid holidays.

  • Working Conditions
    • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Other Requirements
    • Personal tax filings and vehicle registrations must be current and complete.
    • A conditional offer of employment will be made pending a satisfactory completion of a background investigation.
    • If working at a location other than in a state office, this position requires the employee to provide internet service that is of sufficient speed to support all work-related applications, systems, and devices.
